Dr. Vannesia Darby

Dr. Vannesia Darby, an award-winning marketing leader, consultant and scholar, discusses creativity, data, culture and consumer behavior. She serves as digital marketing director at Shondaland and is the founder and principal consultant of Moxie Nashville.

With experience spanning music, entertainment, entrepreneurship, education and digital marketing, Darby says storytelling has always connected her work. “Develop all parts of you,” she says, encouraging marketers to combine creativity with analytical thinking.

Why Does Community Matter?

Darby believes marketers need to understand communities rather than simply collect followers. That means listening to conversations, learning the language and paying attention to comments and online communities.

“It’s our job as marketers to figure out what those are,” she says.

What Should Marketers Look Beyond in Their Data?

“Data tells you what happened. It doesn’t necessarily tell you why.” Darby encourages marketers to look beyond follower counts and engagement rates and consider comments, sentiment, shares and consumer behavior.

What Do Marketers Get Wrong About Women?

Darby believes marketers often make assumptions about women instead of asking them directly. “If you have something that’s targeted to women, I think you should ask women.” She emphasizes that women are not one audience and that experiences, generations and backgrounds all shape consumer behavior.

How Should Marketers Think About AI?

Darby sees AI as a useful tool but stresses the importance of ethics, critical thinking and human judgment. She encourages people to use AI to enhance their thinking rather than replace it.

Why Should Brands Own Their Audience?

Darby also encourages brands to build audiences beyond social media through email and text lists.

“If social media close tomorrow, does that mean that you can’t communicate with your consumers and your customers? No, it shouldn’t.”

For Darby, effective marketing comes down to understanding people—not just platforms or numbers—and keeping the human connection at the center of the work.
